What is a Restomod?

In the past few years, restomods have surged in popularity as the desire for 60s era Muscle car aesthetics, free from government safety regulations, remains strong. The timeless appeal of these beautiful classics, often featured as hero vehicles in modern movies, only fuels people's growing cravings for them. Their stunning beauty is truly remarkable. However, theres a catch. For every bit of beauty they possess, in factory form, they lack in driving dynamics and reliability.

At Lakeview Automotive, we have the pleasure of working with a wide range of classic cars and their owners. While some have been maintaining their beloved classics for years, fully aware of the care and attention they require, others are new to the world of classic car ownership or returning to it after a lengthy break. The second group either forgot or were unaware that many decades ago, when these cars were new, there used to be a mechanic shop at almost every gas station. Yes, a mechanic shop at every gas station! That's how much constant attention these now classics required. Technology simply wasn't there, comparing a carbureted engine to modern direct injected engine with variable exhaust and intake cam timing and fine knock learning is like comparing IBM's old tabulating machines to a modern day iPhone.

Please don't take us the wrong way, we're not saying that a numbers matching Boss 429 doesn't get our spines tingling and our car lover senses buzzing. That being said, If you intend to drive your classic car extensively and you're not a strict purist, which most people aren't deep down, a restomod is exactly what you need. Its like the beer with no hang over. The 60s looks with non of the drawbacks!

There are two ways of doing a restomod. One, modernize the underpinnings (engine, transmission, suspension, breaks and NVH [noise vibration and harshness]) what gives you the feel of an automobile in motion. Two, visually, modernize what the vehicle looks like; this could be in the form of body kits, wheels, paint matching etc. Typically, when a classic undergoes a modern visual updates, it tends to cater to a specific taste and appeal to a more niche audience. However, when classic appearance is combined with modern driving capabilities, the result is truly sensational. This is what Scott's 67 Ford Mustang with the 7.3L Godzilla V8 is like.

What is the best Ford Engine to put into a Ford Restomod?

The 7.3 Liter (445 CU) Godzilla Ford engine is the answer.

Probably one of the best things to come out of the year 2020. We couldn't dream of a better engine for Ford Restomods. When we heard that in their Superduty trucks Ford will be introducing a 7.3 L pushrod engine with 10.5:1 compression we knew these engines will sooner or later make their way into a ton of Ford Restomods. Since that time, we knew we were going to shoehorn one of these engines between the shock towers of a first generation Mustang (1964-73). Being a pushrod engine and narrower than the DOHC 5.0 Coyote we felt confident in being able to swap this new Ford "LS" into a 60s Mustang without having to cut the shock towers out, and replace the suspension system with a Mustang II style system, a practice that must be done in order to fit a coyote in.

Why swap a 7.3 Godzilla instead of the 5.0 Coyote?

Ford's Coyote is a phenomenal engine and we love them dearly, however, they do tend to be a little "European' in their personality. The 7.3L Godzilla is a modern engine with modern engine power, drivability and reliability, however, its "old school" in personality.

In the era of 1960s, muscle cars were powered by hefty truck engines, granting them impressive low-end power. And what is the source of the 7.3L Godzilla engine? It's derived from the Ford Super Duty trucks, boasting ample cubic inches and abundant low-end torque that embody the "classic" traits without any of the traditional limitations. Essentially, the Godzilla 7.3 engine is a modernized classic in itself!

Moreover, with it being a single cam engine, swapping out cams for that old school "lumpy" idle isn't such a hassle like on the Coyote.

Looking at the specs of both engines, it becomes clear why these engines have different personalities. The 7.3 takes on an old school American approach of power by displacement, while the Coyote takes on a European approach of small displacement high efficiency and using Revs to achieve power. There is no doubt that the Coyote is more complex than the Godzilla. Will say it time and time again, if you're looking to modernize a classic Ford, the old school personality of the Godzilla makes it the best option.

How to swap a 7.3L Godzilla into a classic Mustang.

We think that we were the first people to attempt this in a 60s Mustang there was no information anywhere we had to do it from scratch, going in blind. So, we started test fitting.

While the 7.3 Godzilla is just narrow enough to squeeze between the shock towers of a 60s Mustang, its a tall engine with a large rear sump. Scotts 67 Mustang also had rack & pinion steering which made even a low profile rear sump pan impossible to install. Thankfully, Indy Power Products had just developed a front mount oil pump conversion kit for the Godzilla. The kit did a fantastic job in giving us room vertically.

While the 7.3L Godzilla is narrower than the Coyote mainly due to its smaller heads, its still a big engine. With the shock towers in place we had very little room left for exhaust plumbing. So our fabricator Sam built custom log style manifolds to clear without notching the shock towers. Again, we are really doing our best to make this the least invasive swap to the Mustang as possible.

This swap was done at a time when there was very limited aftermarket support for the 7.3. The Truck intake manifold with its throttle body pointing up wasn't going to fit. So our fabricator Sam hand built a manifold to work. Now there are many after market options to choose from.

The Subaru WRX STI has classic car potential

The Subaru WRX STI is Classic car material.

It’s easy to peg the 2008-2014 Subaru GR chassis hatch WRX STI as a future classic, or any WRX STI for that matter.

In most part, the only thing humans rely on when trying to predict the future is to shine a spotlight on the past. In this case we must shine a spotlight on the 80s, and the recent past.

The 80s brought us an onslaught of flared wheel arched hatchbacks that raced on the rally stage completely changing people’s perspectives on what a “super car” looks like or what it encompasses. All the sudden kids tore Ferrari posters off the wall and put ones up of these new “supercars” that looked like mom’s car but with flared wheel arches, boxed fenders, car hips, whatever you want to call them. For example, the now classic Audi Quattro, Lancia Delta Integrale, E30 M3 the list goes on. They looked like day-to-day cars that parents had, but were pinnacle in motorsports, and all that changed aesthetically, were vents and scoops and flared arches.

No exotic illustrious v12s here, just 4 cylinders typically 2L in displacement, but boosted to the moon with swooshing and swashing turbos. The kids LOVED IT. More Ferrari posters came off the walls.

Why did we fall in love with 80s Rally cars? Maybe because they looked more attainable than the exotics, they looked normal but with superpowers, we can relate to them and see ourselves In them. Also, where they were driving, and how they were driving looked unreasonably, and senselessly insane. The Rally stage made road racing look as easy going and relaxed as a SPA Day that someone else paid for.

So what’s not to love about these cars? They were heroic, manly looking, brawny machines that had all the practicality of mom’s car. Most were hot hatches. A car that already revolutionized the enthusiast car scene the decade prior.

Enter the 2008-2014 Subaru Impreza WRX STI - GR hatch. It’s the Lancia Integrale of the 21 ^st century, and for once, us North Americans got it. And boy did we eat them up, especially here in Canada where snow covered our streets and made us hide our fun cars. Snow covered parking lots became gymkhana stages for anyone with a WRX STI - you can now be fast in the cold for slightly cheaper than you could with an AUDI S4. The UEL exhaust note was matchless, and for the first time you can have it in hot hatch form, with a wide body. And no, the GG WRX was a wagon, and a narrow body, so please don’t start that argument.

Now, the year is 2009, you just finished watching the latest Ken Block video, you put your North Face jacket on and make your way to the Subaru dealer to take delivery of your flat 4, turbo charged, 6 spd manual, widebody hot hatch.

14 years and a couple of short blocks later you have yourself a future classic.

We noticed that here at Lakeview Automotive and are currently hoarding all the Subaru WRX STIs with blown engines that we can find. They will all get a mechanical restoration and a variant of IAG Performance forged short block for added power capacity and reliability.

Why?

Because we recognize that as millennials age, we are going to reminisce at the scene in the snowy parking lot and the distinct burble of that turbo flat 4. Soon after that thought, nostalgia is going to have its way and you’ll be making your way down for one of Lakeview Automotive’s Forged Series Subarus.

We are primary focusing on the GR hatch mostly to the fact that it was the only WRX STI that was a hot hatch. If history is correct in telling the future, hot hatches make good classics.

As the years come and go, you can be sure that Lakeview Automotive is holding on to clean Subaru shells and will be releasing them in “Forged Series” variants, stay tuned.

Ford Mustang 7.3 Godzilla Engine Swap - Twin Turbo

Rob, a long-time client of ours contacted us in Late 2021 to start the dialogue on his 2012 Mustang Boss 302. Rob’s Boss 302 in a previous year had been in an accident and its factory “Road Runner” engine sold off. He got the car repaired at a body shop and sent it down to us to fill that empty void in the engine bay.

To put the rest of the story into perspective, Rob already has another Roush Charged Boss 302 at home.

As we pondered what to put into the engine bay we considered installing another Road Runner 302, however, the price on one of those units made it seem silly compared to a fully built Coyote with boost. But, Rob already has one of those at home... well kind of, minus the built part. He at the time had another Roush charged Red Boss 302 that we tuned up to 650 WHP.

AHA! What about one of those new “Godzilla” 7.3L pushrod Ford engines that are coming out in the new Superduty pickups? And of course, Sam, our man on the job insisted it would be twin turbo charged. So we presented it to Rob.

Rob is an avid drag racer, and when it comes to lining up to the tree there is no replacement for displacement, the Godzilla comes with acres of displacement compared to a Coyote based option. Moreover, Rob is an adventurous car guy, so with a vague quote, Rob Gave us the GO AHEAD! We called our parts supplier Western Motorsports and ordered lightly used takeoff 7.3 Godzilla. The motor looked so new when it came in we reckoned it was a “damaged in shipping to dealer” type take off.

Being so soon after the Godzilla 7.3 coming out, there was not much in terms of aftermarket support. There wasn’t even a forged rotating assembly option, or head studs. We knew this was going to be a matter of what can we get out of a fairly stock Godzilla plus boost. However, luckily we were able to secure a Callies Camshaft 220/226 – .630/.621. A mild cam good for boost.

First thing Sam did after getting his hands on the engine was to tear apart and file the rings down for boost.

The 7.3 Godzilla while narrower than the Coyote, is a tall engine. We knew off the get-go we would have a solution for a low-profile oil pan. Luckily 417 Motorsports made a low profile pan for the Godzilla. Credit to 417 Motorsports for coming up with a clever solution. They designed a CNC machined oil pickup mod that sits directly on the oil pump. The original pickup used to sit on the staked plug, this gained 3 inches of clearance.

This is the pan setup all finished with after Sam welded on two AN bungs for the turbo drain lines.

With the exhaust manifolds flipped around, time for the first test fit!

Yep… time to fabricate an intake manifold. No one at the time made one. Plus its pretty awesome to unleash your creative side and fabricate an intake manifold from scratch.

From the bottom we utilized a BMR tubular K member and a hydraulic power steering rack instead of the factory electric one. Too much space was being robbed by the factory setup.

One of the smoothest shifting transmissions, the Tremec TR-3160 out of the Shelby gt350 was what we landed on for a trans for this build.

With everything mocked up and tranny bolted, Sam decided on a final location. Of course, as far back as we could take it.

Custom fabricated mounts seat the engine in place once and for all.

Engine mounts were fabricated from scratch by our man Sam. The amount of detail he put into building them shows his take on quality!

The original MT82 crossmember worked like a charm!

Fabrication on the intake manifold took a bit of time, however, it’s the first thing you see in the engine bay, it had to look good. In no way could we have utilized the plastic Ford manifold, it was too tall and the throttle body pointed up.

Turbo Setup

We went with a set of mirrored VS Racing 67/62 turbos. Getting them hooked up to the engine was all custom fabrication.

Our man Sam knows a thing or two about fabricating custom Turbo set ups. The original exhaust manifolds were luckily stainless and Sam was able to incorporate them, saved a lot of time.

Built a cooler stack with a radiator, AC condenser, and intercooler. Modified the radiator crossmember to make room for the intercooler. Welded elbows directly to the intercooler outlet to sneak it around the radiator.

Cut and welded elbows onto the compressor housings and made hot side charge piping.

Turbo setup pretty much done. The engine is now also sporting some Holley fuel rails and Ford 80lb injectors.

Filling out the engine bay with hardware. PS reservoir, coolant tank, catch cans, washer tank.

Build wouldn’t be Complete without a custom tig exhaust with vacuum actuated dumps. The car is actually very quiet until we heard it all out on the dyno. Shook the whole shop!

For Gauges we went with the LCD Autometer dash.

Dyno Time!

It did exactly what we expected.

Tune 1 – 700 whp 775ftlbs on 10psi on pump gas

Tune 2 – 820 whp 901ftlbs on 14psi on pump gas

Those are big numbers on our Dyno , especially torque (Mustang Dynamometer). The key here is its essentially a stock engine with a cam, boost and on pump gas. For perspective, below is a comparison dyno graph between Boss-Zilla and a 3 ^rd gen direct injected Roush Charged 13psi boost Coyote. Yes the Coyote heads will flow better with their 4 valves and yes the Coyote will rev higher out of the box, but in the end when big reliable power is what you’re after, there is no replacement for displacement.

For Rob this is an evolving build, he will race it for the time being and when he yearns for more power we will update it with all the new parts the industry has been brewing for these God-Zillas. We were very excited to be this early on the 7.3 scene!

4 Ways to Modify Your Subaru WRX STI Reliably

Ensure proper installation, preferably done by a professional. Poor installation of performance parts can lead to costly issues and catastrophic engine failure. Subarus are of the fussy kind when it comes to modification, they don’t respond well if the incorrect combination of parts are used with one another and are not calibrated correctly. Turbo Subarus get a bad rep for reliability when in fact over half of failures we see are due to improper modifications and tuning. With that said, here are 4 ways you can modify your Subaru WRX/STI reliably:

1) Take Advantage of Dyno Tuning

Dyno tuning is the only way to reliably increase your Subaru’s performance. The Subaru WRX / STI engine management system isn’t one that can handle any modifications without recalibration (tuning). In other words, the ECU strategy isn’t as “smart” as some of the new systems out there. Once anything to do with the flow of air (intake and exhaust) is modified, your Subaru is going to need a professional dyno tune. Off the shelf maps, while popular and successful on other brands of vehicles, don’t work well on Subarus and especially here at Calgary elevation and with our gas quality in Canada.

Please do not trust your Subaru with any “tuner” that has no access to an AWD Dynamometer. Tuning can make or break your build. Doing so without a Dyno or the proper equipment is dangerous and blind. Would you trust a “dentist” that does root canals out of their home armchair?

For truly reliable modifications to be successful - please get a professional Dyno Tune done. We have two full-time certified tuners here at Lakeview Automotive and an MD150x AWD dyno with a weather correction station.

2) Address the Key Points of Weakness of the Factory Subaru Engine

This is a way to reliably make more power from your Subaru WRX/STI. Subaru engines especially the EJ-based variants, came with weak and poorly designed cast pistons , meaning they can only handle a slight bump up in power before serious problems occur. This is a widely known issue in the Subaru community, and the main reason we always suggest an engine health assessment test (leak down & compression test) before you purchase a Subaru WRX STI.

To remedy this, IAG Performance offers Subaru short blocks that range in power capabilities from 550BHP to 1200 + BHP. 3) Let Your Subaru Breathe Clean with an AOS (Air Oil Separator)

The AOS (air oil separator), particularly the IAG Performance AOS or the Cobb AOS (which is just a rebranded IAG part) is one of the best mods you can do to a turbo Subaru. It upgrades the PCV system by filtering out the oil vapors out of the crank case and putting the oil back into the oil sump where its much needed, leaving only clean air going back into the charged air.

The OEM PCV circulates the crank case vapors air back into the intake, lowering the octane rating of the air/fuel mixture, this can lead to pre-ignition under load. Pre-ignition is a big killer of Subaru engines. Pre-Ignition is also a big killer of power.

We recommend AOS on Subarus even in stock form, and especially on modified Subarus. The AOS itself is a power adder, it allows us to run more aggressive engine timing safely, because it allows for a cleaner air mixture.

Its important to note that unlike other systems the IAG Performance AOS is designed for cold weather operation. It interacts with the cooling system to insure no freeze-ups happen in cold weather.

4) Upgrade Your Subaru's Fuel System

Lets jump to the basics of modifying any engine for more power. We try and get as much air into and through the engine via removing restrictions in the intake and exhaust, increasing pressure and flow of the forced induction system (turbo) then meeting all that air with the appropriate amount of fuel. Unfortunately, the factory Subaru fuel system is barely adequate for the stock power levels, let alone any big bumps in power. Generally, as part of any real power mod on a STI or WRX, the fuel system will need to be modified as well. This comes in the form of an upgraded fuel pump usually DW400 and ID1050x injectors.

Remember... it's a Subaru - not a Honda, they weren’t designed to take a big beating everyday and not fight back, they may look simple but they’re far from that. With that said, here are 8 general best practices to help keep your Subaru WRX/STI reliable:

1: Warm it up before driving off in cold weather.

The rod bearings are a known weak spot on an EJ motor, making sure the oil is flowing well and warmed up before loading them up is a good idea.

2: Make sure you’re not “lugging” it in too high of a gear.

You’re just increasing load on the engine for no reason. The engine design doesn’t like that. We see less Subarus with engine failures in automatic transmissions because the auto transmission does a good job of keeping it in the right gear. You should too.

3: ALWAYS use the highest octane fuel you can find and never run anything under 91 Octane

Even in stock from the factory tune runs an aggressive timing map. Detonation due to low octane fuel can severely damage a Subaru engine. On hot days, octane booster helps.

4: Tailor your maintenance schedule to you driving style.

We have only really been talking about engines in this post, but while the drivetrain on an STI is robust, it still needs regular flushes, and more frequently if you drive it hard.

5: We again, can’t stress it enough, OIL CHANGES, frequently.

The more your Subaru is in the shop for regular maintenance the easier on your pocket it will be. Bring it often, Our MOTUL service is under $200 and that comes with a full inspection from a tech that knows Subarus in and out. We will catch issues sooner before they snow ball.

6: Check your oil constantly, every gas fill up.

Monitoring your oil consumption is key in a Subaru. You will catch problems earlier that way, and the earlier you catch any problem with a Subaru, you will avoid more headaches.

7: ALWAYS take your Subaru to a Subaru specialist, even if it isn’t us at Lakeview Automotive.

Ensure you pick a reputable Subaru specialists to take it to. These cars are very deferent to any other makes and models. Specialty tools are necessary, and general know how is a must. We fix problems from other shops all the time, and most the time from good shops, its not a lack of care, it’s that this type of car requires a specialist.

8: If its your first time, or you’re not mechanically inclined don’t work on it on your own.

A WRX / STI isn’t the best platform to start learning how to “tinker” on. Start with a simpler platform if you wish to be a do-it-yourself type of owner.

Subaru WRX STI: Common Rod Bearing and MAF Failures

The Subaru WRX / STI is a turbo charged high-performance automobile, and for that reason they tend to be more “needy” in the maintenance department. Below we discuss common rod bearing failures as well as Mass Air Flow (MAF) failures and what you can do about them to increase reliability in a Subaru WRX STI.

“Knock Knock” you hear this a lot in the Subaru community. The knocking sound from a Subaru engine comes from a failure in one of the rod bearings, which is a journal bearing that relies on a small but important oil film to keep the connecting rod from making metal to metal contact with the crank shaft (an extremely important function of an engine). Let's discuss some common issues so you know what to expect when it comes to Subaru Service .

Why Do Rod Bearings Commonly Fail on Subarus?

Well… it all has to do with oil, the oiling system, and the general small surface area of Subaru rod bearing.

Oil contamination or “dirty oil” causes little scratches or scoring on the bearings which impedes them from keeping a consistent oil film. Once the bearings get too scored and a consistent oil film is lost, metal to metal contact occurs, and catastrophic engine failure follows.

Turbo chargers increase cylinder pressures thus increasing blow by (combustion gasses escaping around the piston rings and into the crank case and oil sump) This contaminates the oil with combustion byproducts sooner than on naturally aspirated engines. With the Subaru EJ engines having such a small oil capacity, the oil gets saturated with combustion by products and other engine material sooner. This dirty oil wreaks havoc on bearings and causes them to wear prematurely. With the bearings already being at a disadvantage due to their size, wear also occurs sooner.

Moreover, increased blow by, increases crank case pressure, putting load on the PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) and as the venting system goes into overdrive under boost, Subaru engines tend to burn more oil than other engines. With the small oil capacity, you can run very low on oil and cause oil starvation to the bearings.

Lack of good synthetic oil, and infrequent changes can cause a buildup of deposits around the oil control ring on the piston causing it to jam up. This will put oil consumption in overdrive, again running low on oil and causing oil starvation.

Remedy:

More frequent oil changes (we recommend 4000 KMS, 4 months) and the use of higher grade synthetic oils (we use MOTUL)

Yes, we know Subaru recommends a longer interval, its too long, and for good reason we don’t agree with it. We cannot stress this enough, a turbocharged Subaru needs more frequent oil changes, using a higher grade oil such as Motul.

Subaru Oil Starvation's Negative Effects on Rod Bearings

Other causes of the catastrophic rod bearing failure is when the oil pick up to the oil pump cracks, or oil sloshing under heavy cornering.

Subaru Is known to have made poorly designed oil pick up tubes that crack, and in the case of the later FA style engines, pickup tubes that are clogged from factory with RTV. The oil pickup is the “sipping straw” that the oil pump uses to syphon oil from the oil pan. If it cracks or is clogged up, the oil pump cannot supply oil to the engine as it should. When oil pressure to the rod bearings drop, catastrophic failure occurs.

Due to the design of the oil pan of the Subaru boxer motor, and under heavy g forces during cornering, the oil will slosh to one side of the pan causing the oil pick up to suck up air instead of oil. This will also lead to starvation and rod bearing failure.

Remedy:

We suggest upgrading the factory pick up tube with one of IAG Performance oil pick-ups. While the pan is off to replace the oil pick up, we suggest installing the IAG Performance oil pan baffling kit that helps with keeping the oil from sloshing away from the pick-up tube. Furthermore, IAG Performance also makes higher capacity oil pans that also further help the oiling system we suggest that go back on in place of the factory oil pan.

Subaru WRX STI and Mass Air Flow Vacuum Boost Leaks

Ensuring your Subaru is metering the incoming air correctly and not allowing your Subaru go into a lean condition. Lean condition, or a lean air/fuel mixture in the combustion chamber means higher combustion temperatures and a higher chance of pre-detonation.

Subaru WRX / STI are MAF (Mass Air Flow) cars. Meaning that all the air incoming is measured by the MAF sensor right after the air box. If the MAF sensor reading is off because its dirty or getting up in age it can cause serious issues. Moreover, because air never gets measured again past the MAF sensor, any vacuum leaks down the line will cause unmetered air to enter, this extra air isn’t met with extra fuel in the combustion chamber causing a lean condition.

Lean condition in the combustion chamber will cause pre-detonation, knock, pre-ignition, all terms of the same thing, is an event when the air fuel mixture combusts before the timed spark occurs. This causes the engine to fight itself and break components, and in Subarus, the weak factory pistons are the first to incur damage.

Once the piston is damaged one of two scenarios will occur, either compression is lost and the engine will run on less cylinders which is very noticeable. Or, the ring land for the oil scrubbing ring will fail and cause major oil consumption. Most of the time this goes unnoticed as the engine still runs fine, but, its only a matter of time until the broken ring land scores the bore enough to lose compression, or the excessive oil consumption runs the engine out of oil and then “knock knock” the rod bearings fail.

The latter scenario is why buying a used STI / WRX is a gamble if a leak down and compression isn’t done prior to purchase. Some owners will notice the oil consumption and choose to sell the vehicle or trade it in at a dealer, or auction. Since the issue is very difficult to spot in a regular inspection or test-drive many new owners of used Subaru STI / WRX models find themselves in a very tough situation shortly after purchase.

This is why we started our “Forged Series Program” where we buy WRX STI cars with bad engines but good bodies, and “bullet proof” them to then sell them with warranty. The upgrades we do to bullet proof these Subarus is an IAG Performance forged internal block along with oiling modifications for added reliability. The IAG Performance short block includes a stronger forged piston that can withstand pre-ignition better, and higher cylinder pressures where the factory piston fails.

Remedy:

Ensure your MAF is clean and reading correctly. It’s also not a bad idea to replace it every 70,000 KMS before it starts causing noticeable issues.

Find and fix any vacuum leaks right away, including in the PCV system. At Lakeview Automotive we recommend a boost leak / vacuum leak test frequently to stay on top of any vacuum and boost leaks in the system. We have special tooling to conduct these tests and do them daily.

Subaru can be a bit fussy to own and maintain especially the turbo ones. Being cautious when purchasing one will go a long way. Keep in mind that oiling, vacuum / boost leaks, and pre-detonation is an important matter.

Updating their EJ25 Engine Lineup for 2023

As of March 2023 IAG Performance announced that effective immediately it would be streamlining its Subaru engine offerings, offering less choices of short blocks but making it easier than ever to choose a block that’s right for your set up.

Honestly, most people who were browsing the IAG engine offerings thought that there was too much choice when it came to what engine to choose from. And that the “stage” labeling system was a bit confusing and hard to remember. Here is a blog post we created as a comprehensive guide to the IAG engine offering system .

IAG slimmed down its offerings for a few reasons.

Reason 1: There were too many offerings,

7 to be exact. There are now 5, still a healthy amount of choice, but not enough to overwhelm the decision-making process. The offerings are more or less the same, two are gone and the rest are just re-named.

What used to be the Stage 2 is now the IAG 550 .

Stage 2 TUFF, is no longer.

Stage 2.5, is now the IAG 750 .

Magnum is now the IAG 950 .

Stage 4 tuff, is no longer.

Stage 4 extreme, is now the IAG 1150 .

As you can see, each name is a number, and that number is the maximum recommended brake horsepower each unit can handle. GENIUS! The old naming system was very confusing to say the least. Now you dream up your desired HP level and pick the befittingly named block.

Reason 2: Profitability.

Having too many options means having to stock parts for these options, and include systems and production procedures for each option and that gets costly. When sales figures show that you can do with less options, any good company will streamline when possible, and that’s what IAG Performance did.

Unfortunately, we will miss the stage 2 TUFF, that was our favourite block, but unfortunately it didn’t sell well so IAG axed it.

We think the online parts-only retailers were to blame for the lack of sales. At Lakeview Automotive , being a Certified IAG Performance installer we understood the Stage 2 tuff, and informed our clients on why to choose it.

While it had a hp rating of only 50 over the stage 2 (from 550 to 600) the informed shopper would have known that it came with an oversized piston and a bored and honed cylinder wall (from 99.5mm in stage 2, to 99.75mm). This allowed IAG better control over piston to wall clearance, and that improved “piston slap” while not a huge deal, a thing all forged motors suffer from. Now, if you want that oversized piston set up you have to jump over to the IAG 750 which is more money and most shoppers probably will stick with the IAG 550, which is still a great unit.

Your Subaru EJ25 STI/WRX has blown up, experienced the infamous “ rod knock ,” or you’re proactive and want more power out of your Subaru, and want it reliably.

Now, you’re looking into upgraded engine options because, let's face it, the OEM unit is why you’re here anyway. Unless you’re replacing the engine to merely get by and back on the road, putting an upgraded unit such as one of the offerings by IAG Performance is usually the only way to go. However, there are a few options that float out there.

Buying a used engine.
An OEM short block.
Rebuild locally.
IAG Performance.

Let’s discuss them.

1) Buying a used Subaru engine.

This is a risky option, as 2 out of 5 used EJs we test have bad leak down or compression, or already have rod bearing failure. Nothing is worse than spending time completing the swap — only to find out you have to do it all over again. The 40% chance of that happening is too high for comfort.

Trust us — we've been through this many times over the years of specializing in Subarus. We strictly do not install used Subaru engines here at Lakeview Automotive in Calgary. Even if you buy the engine from a trusted source that will warranty it, they won't pay you back for the time and parts spent swapping if the supplied unit is faulty.

2) OEM short block - and components to make the engines reliable.

This option is okay if you plan to get rid of the car, you're tight on money, or you plan to keep the car at stock power levels. (Or at slightly above power levels — and you promise to take care of it this time. But think about why you are here in the first place).

There are multiple failure points on a Subaru engine you can address to make an OEM short block reliable for years to come at stock power level or slightly above. For starters, address the oiling issues using IAG Performance parts such as the upgraded oil capacity pan and baffles, upgraded IAG oil pickup, and upgrade the PCV system using the IAG air oil separator. And, most importantly, CHANGE YOUR OIL REGULARLY & FREQUENTLY! That takes care of 75% of why the engines blow up in the first place.

The OEM engine can handle around a 20% bump in power, and if you desire more power utilizing mild bolt-ons and tuning, have it tuned professionally on a dyno. We offer pro dyno tuning services here at Lakeview Automotive, using COBB Tuning, or ECUTEK, and our tuners have perfected the Subaru platform. Once the tune is complete, use the same gas you had during the tune, and DO NOT change bolt-ons without getting a re-tune! Tuning, bad gas, and bolt-on swaps without recalibration are the other 25% of why Subarus blow up.

3) Rebuild locally.

Because Subaru engine blocks are split down the middle and held on by bolds, distortion occurs when the heads and other components are bolted together — this makes machining cylinders tricky. Most engine builders are unequipped with that kind of tooling, with some builders electing to machine anyway without the correct tooling. This causes all sorts of issues in terms of engine reliability and longevity.

The second reason you shouldn't: due to high Subaru engine failure rates, companies like IAG Performance have perfected the process of manufacturing “built” Subaru engines. When buying an IAG Performance short block, finished product quality is guaranteed, and when installed through a certified installer like us, it is backed by a 2-year 40k KMS warranty. That's something most engine builders can’t guarantee or offer. Moreover, a local engine rebuild is usually more costly than the OEM or the IAG route.

4) IAG Performance

We became Calgary's IAG Performance dealer because it simply is the best option for all our clients whose Subarus need engines. The Subaru OEM engine is weak, and IAG addresses that by producing engines with stronger pistons, connecting rods, fasteners, close decking of the block surfaces and more precise machining. Their process has been repeated over and over for decades, and with thousands of engines producing immense power worldwide, IAG offers tried and tested consistency.

Each IAG Performance engine starts with a fresh set of case halves (block) with 99.5mm standard bore size. (Higher-level engines are machined to 99.75mm bore size for more controlled piston-to-wall tolerances.) Then each case half is measured carefully, with higher level engines receiving a line honing on the mains and put together utilizing a brand new 2017+ nitride-treated STI crankshaft.

Since the weak point of the OEM Subaru engine is the cast piston, all IAG Performance engines replace the factory connecting rod and piston with a heavier-duty forged counterpart. The Base Stage 2 Block can handle a 40% power increase over stock power, 550BHP, or about 420-450 AWHP on our MD dyno.

Please note that the engines themselves do not produce the jump in power; the supporting mods and tuning does. The engines are rated to withstand higher power outputs.

We will focus on the EJ25 and go through every option IAG Performance offers in that variant. IAG Performance offers EJ20, EJ25 International Hybrid (works with EJ20 heads), and FA-based Subaru engines (direct injected late model WRX, FRS, and BRZ).

IAG 550

Power Level: 550 BHP

This entry-level unit is budget friendly and gets you into the higher power levels reliably. It's entry-level because IAG keeps the bore sizing at 99.5mm. The rotating assembly consists of a 99.5mm JE FSR Forged piston with an asymmetrical skirt design, IAG-Spec H-Beam rods with ARP2000 hardware with ACL or King Race bearings, all bolted to a new Subaru nitride-treated STI crankshaft. Subaru crankshafts are quite strong from factory and won’t need to be upgraded until much higher power levels.

Standard FHI Subaru case bolts are utilized to fasten the case halves together. The compression ratio remains at 8.2:1 on B, W, and V – EJ257 heads. The oil pickup is manufactured using heavy-gauge steel tubing to avoid the cracking failures seen in most OEM oil pickup tubes.

The only downfall with this engine is the probability of piston slap. Piston slap is quite common with forged engines because forged pistons expand and contract with hot/cold cycles more than cast pistons. For that reason, builders give them higher piston-to-wall clearances. Piston slap isn’t necessarily bad; as a side effect of forged pistons, it's simply a noise. Fortunately, it's something the next engine on the list — the IAG stage 2 TUFF — deals with quite nicely.

IAG Stage 2 TUFF - Discontinued

Power Level: 600 BHP

The IAG stage 2 TUFF is our go-to choice of Subaru engines. We stock these on our shelf here at Lakeview Automotive. The IAG Performance Stage 2 TUFF adds on to the Stage 2 2.5L Subaru Short Block with heavier-duty internals. The changes include heavier-duty IAG-spec H-Beam forged rods and heavier-duty and boxed style 99.75mm pistons. The cylinder is bored and honed to accommodate 99.75mm pistons, allowing better control over piston-to-wall clearances. In turn, this results in a quieter running engine, with minimal forged piston slap.

Standard case bolts and standard-sized 11mm ARP head studs are still used in this application. As well, the compression ratio remains at 8.2:1 on B, W, and V – EJ257 heads. The Stage 2 Tuff is good for higher power outputs and the occasional track day duty. Need more convincing? It's what we install on 90% of our builds.

IAG 750

Power Level: 750 BHP

700 BHP is serious power on a Subaru — after all, it's only a 2.5L. IAG achieves this power output rating by close decking the block surface (pictured above). At anything above 600 BHP, boost and cylinder pressures are relatively high; with the OEM deck design being mostly open, the cylinders lack the support needed at such pressures. The lack of support and high pressures cause cylinder distortion that can cause cracking in the cylinder walls — not good.

Close decking is a process where an insert is machined to fit perfectly around the open areas of the deck surface. This insert supports the top of the cylinders, holding them in place under high pressures. Other than that, the Stage 2.5 uses the same piston as the Stage 2 TUFF, only with a thicker rod and wrist pin.

Standard case bolts and standard-sized 11mm ARP head studs are still used on this application. Also, the compression ratio remains at 8.2:1 on B, W, and V – EJ257 heads.

IAG 950

Power Level: 950 BHP

At this power level, three things get addressed and built upon the Stage 2.5.

The introduction of the Fire-Lock head gasket system.
The machining of the block to accept 14mm head studs.
The IAG H Beam-Rods are lengthened by 2mm.

The Fire-Lock head gasket system is loosely derived from the diesel world. At such high power levels and combustion pressures, the seal between the head and the block becomes a weak point. The head gasket and the clamping force of the head studs achieve the seal. To strengthen the head gasket seal, IAG machines a counterbore in the block designed to fit specially-made stainless-steel rings that carry the heavy load of sealing the combustion chamber, aiding the head gasket.

The block is then machined to accept 14mm head studs to allow for higher clamping force. Again, at such high combustion pressures, the heads want to lift off the block. At this point, the factory sized 11mm head studs will fail, causing the head to lift and break the seal. ARP 14mm head studs are utilized to alleviate this issue.

The Rods are lengthened by 2mm to help decrease piston speeds, help with rod angle, and increase dwell time at top dead center and bottom dead center. Decreased rod angle helps with lowering piston side load while decreased piston speed helps at high RPM by increasing TDC dwell time. (This prolongs the compression event). IAG also redesigns the piston to accommodate for the extra 2mm of rod by raising the wrist pin up the piston.

Standard case bolts, and standard-sized 11mm ARP head studs are still used on this application. Once again, compression ratio remains at 8.2:1 on B, W, and V – EJ257 heads.

IAG Stage 4 TUFF - Discontinued

Power Level: 1000 BHP

Out of the box 1000 BHP capable! The Stage 4 Tuff carries over from the Magnum in terms of the Fire-lock sealing system and close decking. However, the rods are now a heavier-duty I-beam design, and the piston and wrist pin have been beefed up to accommodate higher output levels. Moreover, the closed deck is further reinforced by plug inserts, where a vulnerable case bolt access would be.

Std. 11mm ARP head studs are still used on this application. Also, the compression ratio remains at 8.2:1 on B, W, and V – EJ257 heads

IAG 1150

Power Level: 1150 BHP

This is some serious drag racing power. Everything is carried over from the Stage 4 Tuff at this level — plus a wristpin, crank, and case half hardware upgrade.

The Subaru engine (by design) has one major flaw. It is split in half because of its nature as a boxer engine. The case halves are fastened together around the crankshaft with case bolts, meaning the halves are not pinned together from factory. At a power output rating of 1100 BHP, this becomes a problem — the case halves start moving on each other and try to split apart.

As a solution, IAG machines the case halves to take dowels and upgrades the case bolts to ARP counterparts that can be torqued to a higher spec, increasing clamping power. This solution also requires the case halves to be line honed together for precise fitment of the main bearings.

While the 2017+ nitride STI crankshaft is incredibly strong for an OEM unit, at 1100 BHP, it’s time for an upgrade. IAG uses an upgraded billet crank with upgraded oiling passages.

IAG Stage X

Power Level: 1100 BHP+

This is it. This is the biggest, baddest, wildest Subaru block you can get. It’s a full billet block, made from scratch — this enabled IAG / Crest CNC to make a Subaru block from a clean slate, addressing all the weak points of the OEM block.

Each block is machined from 6061 Aerospace Aluminum, utilizing Darton Ductile iron sleeves, and strengthened everywhere the OEM block could have used some help. It also features additional bolts around the case halves to increase clamping force. The Stage X uses the same rotating assembly from the Stage 4 Extreme and keeps the factory compression ratios.

By now, you may ask — why do we keep upgrading pistons and rods and not start off with the strongest set?

The answer is weight. Heavier-duty pistons, wrist pins, and rods are heavier than their lighter-duty counterparts. So if you’re not chasing that kind of power it's better to keep the rotating mass in the engine as low as possible. With IAG blocks, it's always good to match your power goals with what block you choose.

Along with any Subaru engine build, we always recommend the following parts from IAG Performance to further enhance reliability, longevity, and performance over the OEM oil pan, OEM oil pickups, etc.:

Upgraded oil pump (IAG Stage 2 CNC oil pump).
Upgraded oil pan, IAG oil control baffle, and pick up (requires the IAG oil pickup spacer when used with Killer B Oil Pan).

How Subaru AWD Works

Anyone who drives a lot in the winter around Calgary and southern Alberta is familiar with the added benefits of an all-wheel drive (AWD) system. Whether you’re making your daily drive to work along Deerfoot Trail or you’re taking a Christmas vacation in the mountains, AWD offers great peace of mind and more safety for you and your passengers.

However, not all AWD systems are alike, and some set the industry standard for performance and quality much more than others. Having performed Subaru service so many times over the decades, we can tell you why Subaru’s full-time AWD system is among the best, and how it works out on the road.

The Difference Between 4WD and AWD

Let’s start with the difference between basic, on-demand four-wheel drive (4WD) systems and AWD.

Generally speaking, 4WD systems are selectable options overlaid on 2WD engines. They send power to all four wheels only when needed, helping deliver more traction in slippery or cornering conditions. But that’s also where they fall short – because they don’t discern or calculate the different amounts of power needed by the front and rear axles. They just send equal amounts to both, even when more customized parameters would be better and safer.

AWD setups, on the other hand, tailor the power draw to the situation. Through a series of constant calculations, the drivetrain on a Subaru is always monitoring the performance of the wheels and adjusting power supply for torque, speed, and other factors. This improves handling, safety, and overall control, especially on rough terrain..

Subaru's Full-Time AWD System

Subaru’s AWD system is a full-time system – it’s always on and cannot be shut off. This is because it actively enhances the vehicle’s safety and performance, and creates a smoother, more comfortable driving experience.

These full-time systems make more traction available right from the start of your journey, sending and maintaining power to all wheels through any conditions. Even in perfect driving situations, less power is sent to each wheel than would be under a 4WD or on-demand AWD system. This means less slip, more grip, and near-instant handling of changes in traction or direction.

In order to optimize this system for always-on operation, Subaru designed their vehicles from the ground up with it in mind. All the components have been built around this AWD design, with symmetry, centre of gravity, and stability considerations. And because they have all been integrated into a single holistic build, the full-time Subaru AWD is lightweight, efficient, and reliable – on every trip and in any driving condition. A streamlined system with reduced complexity can even increase fuel efficiency, compared to usual 4WD.

Another great piece of design here is the centre differential: a gear setup that varies torque between front and back to prevent torsion stress as power is sent to all four wheels. It also enables the wheels to turn at different speeds while cornering. While all vehicles have some form of differential in order to make turns, the Subaru has them at the front, centre, and rear to take full advantage of the AWD.

All in all, the result of these design choices gives you the pinnacle of automotive design: a balanced, safe, engaging, and confidence-inspiring vehicle experience.

Trey Cobb: Focused on Subaru

In 1999, Trey Cobb was working at a car shop in the small city of Rockwall, TX, just outside of Dallas. Interested in the aftermarket potential for Subaru vehicles in particular, he decided to start up a side business – COBB Tuning – in a spare bay at the back of his dad’s tire shop. With not much more than big dreams, hard work, and natural talent, his business didn’t just survive. It thrived!

The History of Jack Roush

You can’t talk about high-performance Ford engines, tuning classic cars and trucks, and supercharging without talking about the name at the top of it all: ROUSH Performance .

This name is synonymous with racing, speed, and performance parts for Ford Mustangs, F-150s, and other models. But where did the name ROUSH come from? And how did it earn such a great reputation?

Jack Roush: Engineering Ford Performance

Jack Roush was born in Kentucky in 1942, and after graduating high school went on to get mathematics and scientific mathematics degrees.

After that, he began working at Ford in 1966, which kickstarted his lifelong love of the company and its vehicles. He left in 1970 in order to focus on his own start-up engineering business, and began racing in NHRA, IHRA, and AHRA drag racing events.

To improve the performance of his team during these races, ROUSH often developed, tuned, and tweaked his own parts. This led to him selling many of these customized parts to others, and in 1982 he fully partnered with Zakspeed, a German racing company, to develop road racing vehicles for Ford. They saw massive success in the Trans-Am and (now-defunct) IMSA Camel GT series for the next decade, and in 1988 ROUSH co-founded his first NASCAR team.

Founding ROUSH Performance

With such a successful racing and mechanical career, Roush earned his reputation as a major player in the engineering, development, and manufacture of high-performance racing parts for Ford vehicles. In 1995, he decided to branch out and establish ROUSH Performance as a legitimate company, standardizing the processes and parts. From here, he also branched out into new technologies for propane and electric propulsion vehicles – even helping to upgrade the fleet of Blue Bird Corporation’s school buses .

With ROUSH Performance, even though he focused mostly on F-150s and Mustangs, Roush nevertheless created high-performance parts for other vehicles on the Ford line. ROUSH Focus, Ranger, Bronco, and Raptor models are available directly from the company.
